What are Dental Implants

Dental implants are a medical-grade titanium screw which is placed directly into your jawbone, replacing the missing tooth root. A false tooth, (a dental crown), is then secured onto this and matched with the colour and shape of your existing teeth for a natural-looking smile.

Dental implants are the best solution to replace missing or loose teeth, multiple gaps, or loose dentures, and result in the most natural-looking effect to restore your smile and confidence. As a long-term solution, dental implants can last for 10 years or more with the proper care.

What are the Pros and Cons of Dental Implants

Pros Cons
Dental implants provide a natural-looking finish to your smile and function like a natural tooth. As the best and most natural solution to restoring your smile, the procedure can be more expensive than other solutions.
Implants are a fixed and long-term solution, with no risk of them falling out, and can last for 10 years or more. Dental implant treatment can take longer than other solutions, as your mouth will need to heal between the implant and the dental crown being fitted.
Implants restore your teeth and are a strong and stable solution, so that you can continue to enjoy foods with hard or chewy textures. If you do not have enough natural jawbone to support the implant, you might need supporting procedures such as a bone graft, which can add time and have additional costs.
You can prevent bone loss as dental implants stimulate the jaw like natural teeth, and prevent the jawbone beneath from shrinking.
.Unlike other dental treatments, implants do not require teeth to be prepared beforehand.

Dental Implants Procedure

What to Expect from Your Dental Visit

At Beaulieu Dental, our team are committed to providing every patient with a comfortable, stress-free experience – so you can sit back and enjoy your smile transformation. When you book your dental implant treatment, you can expect around three appointments in total.

Treatment Planning:

Dental implants are the optimal choice for replacing missing or loose teeth, providing a healthier and natural-looking smile. Our dental professionals will discuss your treatment goals during the consultation to determine if dental implants are suitable for you.

Preparation and Procedure:

Unlike some of the other dental treatments, dental implants typically do not require teeth preparation. However, if you lack sufficient bone for the treatment, additional procedures like a bone graft may be necessary due to bone shrinkage caused by tooth loss. Your implantologist will discuss these options and address your preferences for the source of the bone.

After placing the dental implant, a healing period of approximately three months (or as recommended) is needed for the bone to fuse with the implant. Once fused, the crown can be created in a couple of weeks. During the procedure, we ensure your comfort by applying anaesthesia, and if needed, we can offer sedation for anxiety or worry. Afterwards, you may experience soreness for a few days, gradually returning to normal within the first week.

What are the alternatives to Dental Implants

Dental implant treatment is an effective and optimal solution for missing or loose teeth, however, it may not be for everyone. We recommend the following alternatives to help you achieve a similar natural-looking solution.

Dental Crowns Dentures
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth – to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues.

There are two types available – complete and partial dentures.

FAQs

Dental implants are a long-term solution and have the highest survival rate of any tooth replacement option.

Typically for non-smokers, over 90% of dental implants can last for 10 years or more with the proper care. For smokers, the success rate is around 85%.

Dental implants can:

  • Restore missing or failing teeth
  • Improve your ability to speak
  • Improve your ability to chew
  • Restore your smile

While most adults are suitable for dental implant treatment, certain lifestyle habits or medical treatments can affect the treatment. Our experienced dental team will ensure to first review the treatment with you and check if you are suitable before proceeding.

For the best chance of long-term success for your implant, you will need to:

  • If applicable, cut down on smoking
  • Have a good oral hygiene routine (Regularly brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash)

See a Dental Hygienist every three to six months to minimise any bacteria and plaque buildup

While the treatment process from start to finish can take an average of four months to complete for simple cases, the actual procedure can take as little as fifteen minutes.

If you have a more complex case, such as needing a full mouth of implants and large amounts of bone adding, then appointments can take up to three hours and from start to finish, the process can take up to 16 months.

If you are missing all your teeth in one arch, we can place full mouth implants. We can also look to do a denture that clips onto implants.
